- How long have you been doing voice overs? How did you get started?
I’ve been doing voice overs since 1999. A few years before that, I was at a wedding talking with a friend of my Mom’s, who for many years had done sound with ABC News. He complimented me on my voice and asked if I’d ever thought of doing anything within the industry. At the time, it wasn’t really on my radar. However, shortly after that, I started working with a friend of mine who had a mobile DJ business. I MC’d weddings, corporate parties, etc. That was my first experience working behind a microphone. From there, I attended broadcasting school, pursued a career in radio, and for the next decade, I hosted afternoon drive while beginning my journey into the world of voice overs. I started out part time doing spots for the local NBC affiliate and it just grew from there. It was a natural transition from one thing to the other.
- What are some of the benefits of being a freelance voice actor and working from home?
Working from home as a freelance voice actor definitely allows more flexibility than most careers. If I need to take some time to take care of an errand or appointment, I can usually do so easily. That being said, you do have to have discipline to make sure you’re putting in the proper time and effort to keep busy and build your business. It’s just great to not be “punching a clock.” Anyone who is creative understands how that type of structure isn’t always a great fit. It’s nice to avoid commuting too, especially when you live in an area with a lot of traffic. Not only is it better as far as my schedule, but I save money on gas and car maintenance. Plus, it’s great to not have to worry about office politics or layoffs. I really feel like I’m in the driver’s seat when it comes to growing my business.
- How is The Voice Realm different to other sites you’ve seen?
I love the fact that you’re not auditioning against hundreds or thousands of other talents and that it’s not necessarily a race to see who can audition first. I also appreciate that you have a set of voice over rates that are not only clear for me and the client, but better than other sites I’ve seen. When you complete the job, The Voice Realm pays quickly too! The site is very professionally designed and executed for the very professional talents that are a part of the roster.
MORE VOICE OVER JOBS
- How has it helped you find new clients and jobs?
It’s put my voice in front of potential clients that otherwise might not have had a chance to hear my work. In this business it’s important to get your name and voice out there as much as possible, so The Voice Realm is a great tool for that. I’m grateful to say that I’ve had repeat business from clients that found me on the site.
- What’s the quality of jobs like that you’ve seen come through the site?
The quality has been great. The work is interesting, varied and pays well. The clients that use the site are also good at giving direction.
- How about the assistance and support you’ve received from the site?
I haven’t had to use support much. The site is very intuitive. Once I had a question about the size of the file I needed to upload for a client. I logged into the live chat and was helped immediately.
- Where do you see the future of the voice over industry going?
I think The Voice Realm has a great opportunity to grow in the years ahead. There are more and more things being developed, such as phone apps, websites, etc. that need voice overs. While some might search independently, I think a lot of producers or developers are going to look for quality talent through this site. It’s an opportunity to shop around and hear many different professionals before deciding on who to hire, all in one convenient and easy to use place.
- What are some of the benefits you’ve found from being in control of which jobs you audition for?
I know there are certain types of styles that I’m better suited for than others. I only audition for jobs for which I believe I’m a good fit. The benefit is I have a better chance of being hired than if I was just auditioning for everything.
