The benefits of being a freelance voice talent are many. Matt Martin has enjoyed new clients and voice over work through The Voice Realm voice over website.
As a professional male voice actor, we wanted to find out how he approaches his work.
- How long have you been doing voice overs? How did you get started?
I’ve been doing VO for quite some time. It wasn’t until a few years ago I finally decided to jump in with both feet and actually start getting paid to do it. I started acting at an early age and was always intrigued by people’s different performances. What was it that I liked so much? What caught my attention and made me listen that much harder? Usually, it came down to the voice, whether it was male or female, young or old, happy or sad, it was the voice that ‘pulled’ me in.
- What are some of the benefits from being a freelance voice actor and working from home?
Flexibility. I don’t stand in front of the mic with my robe on, but it is nice to have the freedom to talk with the mailman or walk the dog when I’d like to.
- How has The Voice Realm helped you find work?
I like practical business and the auditions I have seen at The Voice Realm are just that. The client seems to know exactly what they want without the ‘maybe this’ or ‘maybe that’. Sure some auditions are a little off the wall, but that’s planned, not ambiguous!
- How is it different to other sites you’ve seen?
The Voice Realm has some unique projects with some unique voice seekers. I guess I like to gravitate towards those a little more. It forces me to ‘step’ out a little more than I’m used to. It’s also nice to be in touch with ‘the back office’. You certainly don’t see that much on other sites.
- What’s the quality of jobs like that you’ve seen come through the site?
The quality here is nice! You definitely get paid in a scale that is acceptable to both ends of the table. Bottom line: You get what you pay for.
- How have you found customer service from the site to be?
The ‘back office’ as I call it, has been great. I’ve never had an e-mail unanswered. The staff takes the time to make sure both sides of the process understand the playing field. It’s nice knowing they’re there for you.
- Where do you see the future of the voice over industry going?
The VO biz is going nowhere but up. It’s not everywhere, but it sure is getting there. Technology is not going to stall out and neither is this industry.
- What are some of the benefits you’ve found from being in control of which jobs you audition for?
Being able to choose which auditions you want to accept is great. As a business person, sometimes it’s nice to just say ‘no’ and to walk away satisfied with that decision. Why waste their time and yours!
